BC PNP Health Authority Stream

US Doctors & Nurses Moving to BC

The BC PNP Health Authority stream is a direct way to permanent residence for US-trained doctors and nurses who land jobs with one of British Columbia’s regional health authorities. There are some hoops to jump through - like meeting certain eligibility requirements, getting a valid job offer, and making your way through the provincial nomination system - but for many, it’s a lot more straightforward than other routes.

Overview of the Health Authority Stream

This Health Authority stream is actually its own category under the BC Provincial Nominee Program (BC PNP). It’s designed so healthcare professionals with offers from any of BC’s six health authorities can apply for provincial nomination without having to compete in the usual BC PNP pool. That’s a bit of a relief, honestly.  Unlike Express Entry, this stream runs separately. Candidates get priority processing and a bit more hands-on support from Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada. It’s a nice change of pace if you’re used to the usual wait times.  BC’s health authorities – Fraser Health, Interior Health, Island Health, Northern Health, Vancouver Coastal Health, and the Provincial Health Services Authority – each handle recruitment for their own region and send out job offers directly to qualified folks.  The program’s all about tackling the province’s healthcare shortages. Lately, we’ve noticed applications through this stream move a lot faster than some of the other immigration options, which is encouraging if you’re eager to get started.

Eligibility Criteria for US-Trained Nurses and Doctors

US doctors need valid medical credentials that the College of Physicians and Surgeons of British Columbia recognizes. You’ll have to finish the registration process with the College either before or at the same time as your immigration application.  Nurses have to register with the BC College of Nurses and Midwives. Most US-trained registered nurses get in through credential assessment, though sometimes there are extra bridging steps, depending on your background.

Main eligibility criteria:

  • A valid job offer from a BC health authority
  • Proper professional licensing, or at least a clear path to licensing in BC
  • Meeting the minimum language standards (CLB 4 or above)
  • Showing you genuinely plan to live and work in British Columbia

We’ll help you figure out exactly which licensing route fits your case. The requirements aren’t the same for family doctors, specialists, RNs, or LPNs – so it’s worth double-checking before you start the process.  You’ll also need to clear federal admissibility requirements for permanent residence. That means medical exams, security checks, and maybe proof of settlement funds, depending on your situation.

Steps for Obtaining a Job Offer from a BC Health Authority

Healthcare professionals usually apply straight through the BC health authority career sites, or sometimes with help from specialized recruitment agencies. Each health authority does its own hiring and has its own job boards.  Health Match BC is a great provincial resource that connects healthcare workers with openings across all the health authorities. It’s free, and they’ll help with job hunting, licensing advice, and immigration info.

The general process:

  1. Apply through the health authority websites
  2. Do interviews (these days, it’s often remote)
  3. Get a formal written job offer
  4. Negotiate the details and confirm you’re accepting

We usually suggest US doctors and nurses check out the different regions before applying. Rural and northern areas tend to have more urgent needs and sometimes throw in extra incentives for relocation.  The job offer itself has to meet BC PNP standards – things like a certain wage and full-time, permanent status. We always review offers for clients to make sure they’re solid before moving ahead with immigration paperwork.
